No list on winning would be complete without looking at personal development. To round out our list of 20 ways you can win in 2020, we focus on ways you can Build Yourself Up:

7: Build your expertise. Continually developing your skills and knowledge not only benefits your company, but it also benefits your career. And it’s easy to do. Whether you attend seminars, read industry publications, write for industry publications, pursue additional education or certification, or join a professional society, you show your present and future employers that you’re capable, competent, and confident. You know, a winner.

6: Work with people who are smarter than you. Likewise, hire people who are smarter than you. Throw jealousies or insecurities aside and embrace the opportunity to learn from the top folks in your profession. You’ll be a better person and professional because of them.

5: Look at failure as an opportunity. We know: failure stinks. But like with any battery, there’s always a positive with the negative. Learn from your mistakes. Let knowing the “wrong way” build your confidence in the “right way.” Use your failure to develop new ideas. Don’t be content to tuck your tail between your legs and walk away: hold your head up and charge forward.

They acted on an aggressive urge that caused them to harm others or destroy property. They grew paranoid. They developed gambling problems. They worried. They struggled. They suffered.

Taking care of your mental health is the most important thing you can do for your personal and professional success in 2020. For you, that might mean developing more friendships at work or learning to work with a difficult boss or co-workers. Maybe it means trying to be less competitive with co-workers and more of a team player. Whatever it is at work that stresses you out and makes Monday feel like the start of a new prison sentence, take the time to address your emotional outlook on life and work.
