AMiable Solution #354: 20 Ways to Win in 2020, Numbers 1-7
No list on winning would be complete without looking at personal development. To round out our list of 20 ways you can win in 2020, we focus on ways you can Build Yourself Up:
7: Build your expertise. Continually developing your skills and knowledge not only benefits your company, but it also benefits your career. And it’s easy to do. Whether you attend seminars, read industry publications, write for industry publications, pursue additional education or certification, or join a professional society, you show your present and future employers that you’re capable, competent, and confident. You know, a winner.
6: Work with people who are smarter than you. Likewise, hire people who are smarter than you. Throw jealousies or insecurities aside and embrace the opportunity to learn from the top folks in your profession. You’ll be a better person and professional because of them.
5: Look at failure as an opportunity. We know: failure stinks. But like with any battery, there’s always a positive with the negative. Learn from your mistakes. Let knowing the “wrong way” build your confidence in the “right way.” Use your failure to develop new ideas. Don’t be content to tuck your tail between your legs and walk away: hold your head up and charge forward.
4: Challenge yourself. You can’t win at anything if you don’t try anything. Take on a big project. Learn a new skill. Improve your public speaking/presentation skills. Whatever you do, give it your best effort and celebrate your victories.
3: Take care of the quality of your life. Give your job your all when you’re there, but don’t give all you are to your job. If you find yourself spending more evenings in the office than at home, learn how to reduce your work hours without compromising productivity. You’ll be healthier and happier, and so will your loved ones.
2: Take care of your physical health. For most of us, it’s a daily struggle and one that we don’t necessarily like to be reminded of. Still, it’s worth repeating. Exercise regularly. Eat healthier. Get your sleep. You can’t be your best self or give your best at work when neglecting your health.
1: Take care of your mental health. According to a national survey conducted by Mind Share Partners, 60% of employees said they experienced symptoms of negative mental health at work in the past year. They felt anxious, had rapid heartbeats, got dizzy, and fainted. They lost interest or pleasure in most activities for weeks at a time. They acted on an aggressive urge that caused them to harm others or destroy property. They grew paranoid. They developed gambling problems. They worried. They struggled. They suffered.
Taking care of your mental health is the most important thing you can do for your personal and professional success in 2020. For you, that might mean developing more friendships at work or learning to work with a difficult boss or co-workers. Maybe it means trying to be less competitive with co-workers and more of a team player. Whatever it is at work that stresses you out and makes Monday feel like the start of a new prison sentence, take the time to address your emotional outlook on life and work.
Whether you need to seek counseling, meet with human resources, or find a new place of employment altogether, finding a solution to the problems that threaten your mental well-being will give you the biggest win of 2020 and beyond, and we think you deserve it.
Best wishes for a happy, successful, and winning new year.
